Oman Drilling Project

A multi-national collaboration to explore ancient seafloor in the deserts of Oman

OmanDP Phase 1 detailed core description will take place from 15th July to 15th September on board the Research Vessel Chikyu, while she is docked in Japan. The shipboard science party of 67, including six Omani trainees, will perform detailed, IODP-standard logging of 1500m of core from 15th July to 15th September 2017. The results will be published as an Initial Reports Volume of OmanDP Phase 1 along with wireline logging data from all six sites drilled in Phase 1.

OmanDP Phase 2 drilling operations are tentatively scheduled to begin on November 1st 2017 with coring at site MD1 (crust-mantle transition), estimated to last approximately five to six weeks. Drilling at BA site (active serpentinisation) is expected to begin in mid-late December/early January and to be complete in March 2018. The online application form is now closed for maintenance and updates but will re-open on 10th September 2017 for further applications to participate in Phase 2. The deadline for applications to participate in Phase 2 drill site science operations will be Friday 13th October 2017.
